VLAN এর পূর্ণরূপ হলো Virtual Local Area Network।

কোন একটি নির্দিষ্ট স্থানের অথবা নির্দিষ্ট ভৌগলিক এলাকায় অনেকগুলো নেটওয়ার্ক ডিভাইসকে একত্রিত করে উক্ত ডিভাইসগুলোর সাহায্যে যে নেটওয়ার্ক গড়ে তোলা হয় তাকে Local Area Network বা LAN বলে।

আবার ফিজিক্যাল ল্যান এর মধ্যে ভার্চুয়াল লজিক্যাল ল্যান তৈরি করাকে VLAN বলে ।

ধরা যাক, কোন একটি কোম্পানির প্রধান কার্যালয়ে বিভিন্ন বিভাগ বা ডিপার্টমেন্ট রয়েছে। প্রত্যেকটি বিভাগেই কিছু কম্পিউটার ব্যবহার করা হয়। ঐ অফিসের কম্পিউটারগুলোকে যদি আমরা একটি ‘সুইচের’ সাহায্যে সংযোগ স্থাপন করে একটি নেটওয়ার্ক ব্যবস্থা সৃষ্টি করি তবে সেটাকেই আমরা LAN বা Local Area Network বলতে পারি।

Virtual Local Area Network এর ক্ষেত্রে ব্যাপারটা কিছুটা ভিন্ন। এ ক্ষেত্রে একটি সুইচের সাথে যুক্ত থাকা কম্পিউটার ডিভাইসগুলো লজিক্যাল ভাবে আলাদা একাধিক গ্রুপে বিভক্ত হয়ে যায় এবং উক্ত প্রত্যেকটি গ্রুপ নিজেরা আলাদা ভাবে LAN বা Local Area Network হিসেবে কাজ করে। এখানে যেহেতু একটি ফিজিক্যাল সুইচ থাকে তবে একাধিক লজ্যিকাল সুইচ হিসেবে কাজ করতে পারে, তাই একে Virtual Local Area Network বলা হয়।

Default VLAN: এটি মূলত Cisco এর সুইচগুলোতে একটি VLAN ID ব্যবহার করে ডিফল্ট হিসেবে ready করা থাকে, তাই একে Default VLAN বলে। এই VLAN কে পরিবর্তন বা ডিলিট করা যায় না। বিভিন্ন ধরনের Production Network এর নিরাপত্তার জন্য এই VLAN টি ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ। তাই এক্ষেত্রে Default VLAN না ব্যবহার করাই ভালো।

Management VLAN: এই VLAN এর মাধ্যমে নেটওয়ার্ক ম্যানেজমেন্ট ট্রাফিকসমূহ আদান-প্রদান করা হয়। যেমনঃ Telnet, GDP, SSH, SNMP etc. General User Traffic এবং Management Traffic গুলোকে আলাদা এবং safe রাখতে এই VLAN বিশেষভাবে ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Data VLAN: Data VLAN মূলত এমন একটি VLAN যেটি ব্যবহার করে নেটওয়ার্ক এর মধ্যে ইউজারদের Data আদান-প্রদান করা হয়।

Voice VLAN: VoIP বা Voice Over Internet Protocol এর ট্রাফিকগুলোকে Normal Traffic থেকে আলাদা রাখার জন্য Voice VLAN ব্যবহার করে separate করা হয়।

Native VLAN: VLAN নেটওয়ার্কের মধ্যে দুইটি সুইচের লিংকের মধ্যে দিয়ে অনেক Untagged বা VLAN ছাড়া Traffic চলাচল করে। এই ট্রাফিকগুলোকে আদান-প্রদান করার জন্য Native VLAN ব্যবহার করা হয়।
